Bollywood Brass Band & Jyotsna Srikanth: Rahmania – Saturday 21st January 2017

Enter the colourful and intoxicating world of Indian films and film music, and celebrate the 50th birthday of one of the world’s greatest film composers, in the 70th anniversary year of Indian independence. The Bollywood Brass Band will play a complete concert of songs from the 25 year career of AR Rahman, the Grammy and Oscar-winning composer whose songs have become part of the soundtrack of Indian life and spread across the world.

The show will be accompanied by video sequences from the original Indian films, synched to the live music by our VJ. AR Rahman has been described as the world’s most prominent and prolific film composer by Time magazine. His works are notable for integrating Indian classical music with electronic music sounds, world music genres and traditional orchestral arrangements. Featured songs will include the Academy Award-winning Jai Ho (from Slumdog Millionaire), massive hits like Chaiyya Chaiyya and classics like Hum Aur Tum from Bombay.

The Bollywood Brass Band is the UK’s pioneering Indian-style brass band, playing the great tunes and compulsively danceable rhythms of Bollywood. The band has released four CDs, including Rahmania which is devoted to the composer’s hits and Chaiyya Chaiyya (2011), which was a top 10 Sunday Times World Music album and nominated for a Songlines Award.

Bollywood Brass Band and Jyotsna Srikanth are receiving rapturous reviews for their recent collaborative album Carnatic Connection, described as “rousing, exuberant and exquisite” by the Guardian and chosen as one of the 10 albums of the year by Songlines Magazine. Jyotsna Srikanth is Europe’s leading violinist from the South Indian classical tradition. She has played for dozens of South Indian film soundtracks, and has collaborated with acclaimed jazz, western classical and world music artists.
