The Nowka Bais is a Bangladeshi style dragon boat race. Taking place on Sunday 16 July 2017 the annual event sees 18 teams race across Edgbaston Reservoir in traditional Bangladeshi dragon boats whilst raising money for local charities.
The event aims to bring the city’s diverse and cosmopolitan communities together to experience, celebrate and experience in Bangladeshi culture in a fun and sociable environment.
This traditional form of dragon boat style racing originates from rural the villages of Bangladesh and is normally held after the monsoon rains. Each boat was traditionally forty feet long, painted bright red, white, yellow and green, with a 16 man crew all robed in dazzling colours, paddling frantically with boundless energy to the beat of the drummer in the prow of the boat.
As well as the dragon boat racing the event will have a carnival atmosphere and will showcase of the very best in Bangladeshi culture with local stalls, Bangladeshi street food, a funfair, sailing taster sessions and live Bangladeshi music.
